What Is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

If you’ve looked into treatment options for your child with autism, you’ve probably seen the term “ABA.”

ABA, or applied behavior analysis, is one of the most effective therapies for autism. It’s backed by decades of research and widely recognized by doctors, psychologists, and behavioral health experts. In the U.S., insurance companies are required to cover ABA therapy, which can take place at home, school, in the community, or at specialized Learning Centers.

Many people think ABA is just one type of therapy, but it’s actually a flexible approach that uses different techniques to help children develop important skills for school and daily life.

What We Mean by Contemporary ABA

At BACA, we use the term “contemporary” ABA to differentiate our approach from the older, more rigid style of therapy.

So, what does contemporary ABA mean? It builds on the foundations of traditional ABA but has evolved significantly since the 1970s and ’80s. Early ABA therapy primarily focused on reinforcing specific behaviors, but today’s approach is more child-centered, developmentally appropriate, and family-focused.

Shaped by decades of clinical expertise, our contemporary ABA:

Uses data and current treatment literature to inform and guide practices and treatment

Makes learning playful, naturalistic, age-appropriate, and fun

Integrates the unique needs, interests, culture, and values of your child and family

Considers you and other caregivers a core partner in your child’s treatment

Science is always evolving, so it’s important to choose a provider who stays up to date with the latest research. Find a team committed to high-quality care and active in ABA conferences and training. With the right support, your child can thrive and live a happy, fulfilling life.

Everything You Need, Close to Home

We know life can be stressful, and every child with autism is unique. That’s why we offer services in different settings — our Learning Centers, your home, the community, and your child’s school. Some children benefit more from one setting than another, so we start with an assessment to find the best fit. We also provide additional services that are customized for each child’s needs, such as speech and language therapy. We will work with you to design a plan that fits your family’s needs.

At BACA, we understand that life with autism may not be what you expected. We’re here to help with practical strategies you can use in daily routines to support your child’s success. With the right care, your child can thrive — and we’re here to help make that happen.
